The Agapanthus

The farm has been planted with a spectacular variety of Agapanthus collected over the past ten years. This collection can all be seen flowering in the summer months. Their availability for sale, however, depends on their having reached an acceptable degree of maturity for their harvest.

Standard (Praecox Orientalis)

Description
Standard blue and white. Best known of species. Wide arching leaves up to 60cm (24”) long. Flowers grow an approximate height of 1 metre (3ft). These plants will survive with little water and will multiply each year. Prefer full sunlight but will grow in shade although this will limit the size of flowers.

Dutch Blue Giant

Description
A tall plant with huge flower head. Has distinctive wide, pale green leaves. Its special feature is it’s late flowering in Autumn when other agapanthus have finished their cycle. Great for large areas when you need an instant garden.

Description
Similar to standard plants but up to 1.7 metres high with large flowers on tall stems.

Double Delight

Description
Unusual refined low growing plant with prolific double petaled flowers. The dark green leaves are wider than those of the miniature species. Likes semi shade.

Description
Green leaves approximately half the width of the ‘standard’ plants. Grows to approximately twice the height of the ‘dwarf’ plants with attractive flowers. Prolific growers and form attractive clumps.

Pioneer Praecox Orientalis

Description
Similar to standard plants but these were obtained from a single clump over 75 years of age. It has been singled out because of its rigorous growth and wonderful large dense flowers. Stunning in the winter months as its green foliage stands upright and makes a stunning statement when planted close together.

Description
A so called ‘pink’ species. White flowers with strong infusion of claret colouring giving a striking pink effect.
The flowers are remarkable for their tendency to all face upwards.

Needs full sun.

Are especially suitable for indoor cut flowers where they are long-lasting and tend to develop to a deeper pink as they age.

Dark Varieties

 

Guilfoyle 

Description
Paler green leaves than standard plants. Prolific grower. One plant had eleven blooms in its second year of flowering. Flowers up to 150cm high. This is in our opinion the ‘Prince’ of Agapanthus with its large rounded head and deep purple colour (navy).

Dark Purple Dwarf 

Description

Purple Cloud

A New Zealand raised Agapanthus. It makes 180cm tall stems topped by large heads of inky blue flowers that hang in an attractive form. The foliage tends to greyish green.
